The Jester is the only one in the Kings court who could open his mouth, and speak the truth, as long as it got a laugh, like the king is naked!
The Jester goes by many names: fool, trickster, buffoon, jack-pudding, and wearer of the motley.
Jesters were the carnival clowns and stand-up comedians of their day. They probably go back a long way. The first jesters probably entertained prehistoric tribal society with their Wise Fool antics.
They had many skills in the Middle Ages, and were not only seen in the royal courts, but rented for parties, or free-lance in the village squares.
Their skills were many: they played lutes and flutes, danced, juggled, told jokes, did acrobatics and pantomime, rope-walked performed tongue twisters, yodel , sang and did vocal tricks.
Being a Jester was almost the only profession in those days in which a Jester could move up the social ladder, and some day be invited to the royal court. Almost any one, even children of a peasantry family could become a jester.
Kings and Queens grew to love their Jester because between witty wisecracks, they would share very valuable insights, and be honest with the royalty that is constantly being falsely complimented, or lied to. After all, many truths have been spoken in jest, and many lies have been spoken in earnest.
